Supergrass Collections. Who’da thunk it? The new Supergrass album is a doozy!
They are back to doing what they do best and rockin’ the joint – making the good noise and doing it all with a cheeky grin and a supercilious attitude.
Basslines are fat and rich, drums hammer, vocals are strained and over-reaching, guitars chime and riff and the songs are real songs with real words and melodies. These songs are intense, bubbly, dark and not necessarily nice but they are rock ‘n’ roll and they bubble over with the sound that propelled Supergrass to the front of the Britpop ranks all those years ago.
Supergrass have always been a little lairy and this album celebrates their difference from the mainstream mainstream.
Two hit singles so far – ‘Diamond Hoo Ha’ a couple of months back and ‘Bad Blood’ currently on release and I would guess that there are three more possible hits in ‘When I Needed You’ – piano and a martial beat – and ‘345’ which rushes at you and drags you into a thrashing rictus dance are both surefire but the surprise might be the more reserved ‘Ghost of a Friend’ which is a sublime piece of folk/pop.
Production is superb and the band are sounding really happy to be making the album, no grumpy old men of rock here – essential stuff.
